Garden Thoughts will be a space for commentary about gardening, photos, videos, gardens to visit, plants to recommend, and anything that we think might be of interest to fellow gardeners. Just as the garden will be a work in progress, so will our garden thoughts. New items will be planted and old ones pruned or dug up and discarded. Select from the topics at left. Ollie Hopnoodle is our friendly garden troll. The name Ollie Hopnoodle comes from the movie Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss, by author and actor Jean Shepherd. Jean Shepherd is most well-known for the classic film, A Christmas Story. Ollie watches over our vegetable garden but unfortunately he does not deter the bunnies from invading the garden. I have an ongoing battle with the bunnies. Ollie reminds me that things don’t always go the way we want or expect, especially regarding bunnies, gardening or life. Realizing this and being thankful for all of life’s blessings is the true “haven of bliss”. This is the basis for my gardening philosophy and the foundation for choices in life. In the end we all wind up in the big compost heap. It’s the process of growth and life affirmation that matters. Any day spent in the garden is a good day.
